Course Overview

Dangerous Goods handling awareness training provides employees, personnel & those who are responsible for overseeing, preparing, handling and transporting hazardous materials with the necessary knowledge to handle these substances safely.

Course Objectives

  • The participants will receive a thorough introduction in the requirements and stipulations of the IMDG-Code
  • The characteristics of different IMDG classes will be explained and demonstrated as well as methods of identifying hazardous materials based on the marking, labelling and placarding of containers containing dangerous goods.
  • An understanding of the documentation required, internationally, for the safe transport of dangerous cargoes will be provided.
  • Legal requirements and the importance of proper storage and segregation of hazardous materials will be realized after detailed reference to the IMDG Code.
  • Participants will learn the emergency response procedures and medical first aid and be briefed regarding the importance of contingency planning.

Module 2: Dangerous Goods Classification

Module 3: Use of packaging including IBCs and Large package

Module 4: Marking, Label & Placards

Module 5: Dangerous Goods Documentation

Module 7: Emergency Response Plans

  • IMDG Code
  • Classification and identification of dangerous goods.
  • Documentation including the shippers’ declaration.
  • Marine pollutants.
  • Marking and labeling and documentation.
  • Packaging of dangerous goods. 
  • Segregation.
  • Stowage.
  • The application of dangerous goods by air regulations.
  • The general philosophy of dangerous goods transportation.
  • The limitations on the transportation of certain dangerous goods by air
  • The merchant shipping dangerous goods and marine pollutant regulations.
  • UN specification packaging.

UN Recommendations 1

  • UN recommendations form the basis of dangerous goods regulations.
  • They deal with multimodal safety issues.
  • They do not deal with any safety issues which are specific to just one mode transport.

UN Recommendations 2

  • The UN Recommendations cover among other matters.
  • Classification and identification for transportation.
  • Listing of dangerous goods.
  • Use of packaging.
  • Consignment and documentation.
  • Packaging and tank design.
  • Transport procedures.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Participants must demonstrate the ability to read and write English
  • Participants are required to submit a valid form of identification. The following are acceptable forms of identification accepted.
    • National Identification Card
    • International Passport
    • Nigerian Armed Forces identification card
    • A photo Identification card issued in Nigeria by the Federal State, or Local Government, Ministries
    • Departments and Agencies
    • Driver’s License with a photo of the driver issued by FRSC
